Where to Stay in Koh Phangan: An Honest, Area-by-Area Guide

Each part of Koh Phangan suits a different trip. Here is who each area is for, and why we chose the quiet west coast.

The short answer: where to stay in Koh Phangan depends on what you want from the island. Stay in Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party, Thong Sala for convenience, the west coast (Wok Tum, Hin Kong, Srithanu) for sunsets, food and quiet, Haad Yao or Haad Son for swimming, Chaloklum and the north for village life and snorkelling, and Thong Nai Pan or Bottle Beach for real seclusion. For couples, families and remote workers, we think the quiet west coast is the best all-round base.

We are biased, of course: our villas are in Wok Tum. But we have stayed all over the island, and every area below suits someone. Here is how we would choose.

Haad Rin: for the parties

Haad Rin is the narrow peninsula at the island's south-eastern tip, with a beach on each side. Haad Rin Nok, or Sunrise Beach, hosts the Full Moon Party every month, usually from around dusk until dawn; Haad Rin Nai, or Sunset Beach, round the corner, is calmer. The village between them is dense with hostels, bars, restaurants and small shops.

Stay here if the parties are the reason for the trip and you want to walk home. The Haad Rin Queen ferry runs direct from Koh Samui to Haad Rin, taking around 50 minutes. Do not stay here if you want sleep around party nights, or if you are travelling with children.

Thong Sala and Baan Tai: for convenience

Thong Sala is the island's main town and port. Most ferries arrive here, and it has the banks, larger supermarkets, private hospitals, scooter rental and the island's best-known markets: the Saturday Walking Street (about 16:00 to 22:00) and the Phantip night food market, open every evening (as of October 2026). It is central, well connected and good value.

East along the south coast, Baan Tai and Baan Kai have budget and mid-range resorts on long, shallow beaches. Baan Tai is also party territory: the Half Moon Festival and the Jungle Experience are held in the jungle near here around the full moon.

Who it suits: short stays, travellers on a budget, and anyone who wants to explore the whole island by scooter. Who it does not: people who want a swimming beach or a sense of escape.

Wok Tum, Hin Kong and Srithanu: the quiet west coast

North of Thong Sala, the road follows the west coast through Wok Tum, Hin Kong and Srithanu. These are wide, shallow bays facing the sunset, with a long strip of restaurants and bars on Hin Kong road and, in Srithanu, the island's yoga and wellness community, plant-based cafés and coworking spaces. The pier is 8 to 20 minutes away, and the island's government hospital is between Wok Tum and Srithanu.

The honest drawback is the tide: the bays are reef-fringed and very shallow, so at low tide the sea retreats a long way and swimming is poor. Most people here swim at Haad Son or Haad Yao, a short drive north, or in their own pool.

Who it suits: couples, families, yoga and wellness travellers, remote workers and long stays. Who it does not: party-first trips. Our Wok Tum and Srithanu area guide has the practical detail, and the Koh Phangan west coast guide covers the whole coast.

Haad Yao and Haad Son: for swimming

A little further north, Haad Yao ("long beach") stretches almost a kilometre and has the west coast's best swimming for most of the year, plus resorts and restaurants along the sand. Next door, Haad Son, also called Secret Beach, is a small, sheltered cove with clear water and only a few places to stay. Both face the sunset.

Who it suits: beach-first holidays, families who want easy swimming, couples. Who it does not: anyone on a tight budget or looking for nightlife. See the best beaches on the west coast for tide notes.

Chaloklum and the north: for village life

Chaloklum is a working fishing village on a wide northern bay, with long-tail boats along the shore and seafood restaurants on the main street. Nearby Malibu Beach has soft white sand, and Mae Haad, round the corner, has a sandbar to the islet of Koh Ma and the island's best shore snorkelling. Dive trips to Sail Rock leave from the area.

Who it suits: divers and snorkellers, slow travellers and families who like a real village around them. Who it does not: people who want to be near Thong Sala's shops every day, though it is only around 20 minutes away.

Thong Nai Pan: for seclusion

On the north-east coast, Thong Nai Pan is two neighbouring bays, Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi, with soft sand, clear water and a range of resorts from simple to five-star. The road from Thong Sala is now paved, but it is steep, with tight bends, and takes around 30 to 45 minutes by car; it is not a road for inexperienced riders, especially after rain.

Who it suits: couples and families who plan to stay put at a resort. Who it does not: anyone who wants to explore the island, eat around or catch an early boat.

Bottle Beach: for getting away from everything

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is a jungle-backed bay on the north coast with a handful of simple bungalows. There is no easy road: you arrive by long-tail boat from Chaloklum (roughly 400 baht and 30 minutes each way, as of October 2026), by 4x4 taxi down a rough track, or on foot along a jungle trail of about an hour and a half. Scooters are not recommended.

Who it suits: a few days of disconnection, hikers, readers. Who it does not: almost anyone with luggage, children or a schedule. It makes a wonderful day trip from Chaloklum instead.

Why the quiet west coast suits most trips

If you are not here for the parties, the west coast gives you the best balance on the island. You are close to the pier, the markets and the private hospitals in Thong Sala, but your evenings face the sunset rather than a sound system. The food is excellent for an area this small, and the island's swimming beaches, snorkelling and hikes are all within 20 minutes.

For couples, that means slow mornings, a sunset drink at a hilltop bar, dinner a short walk away and a quiet night. Our sunset spots and west coast restaurants guides are a good start.

For families, it means short drives, a hospital nearby, flat roads and easy beach days at Haad Yao.

For remote workers, it means coworking spaces and Wi-Fi cafés in Srithanu, padel and gyms nearby, and a community of people doing the same thing. See our wellness, spa and gym guide.

Why a private pool villa

The one thing the west coast lacks is easy swimming straight off the sand, which is exactly what a private pool solves. A pool of your own means a swim whenever you want, whatever the tide, and a place for children to play within sight. A villa also gives you a kitchen, separate bedrooms and room to spread out, which matters on a longer stay or when you are travelling with friends or family.

That is how we designed Mira. There are six identical private pool villas in Wok Tum, each with two bedrooms, its own pool, a covered terrace and sun deck, a tropical garden and no shared spaces. Inside, a double-height A-frame teak ceiling rises over a sunken lounge and open kitchen, with floor-to-ceiling glass, air conditioning throughout, and teak, rattan and travertine finishes; the furniture was made to measure by local craftsmen. The first villas are open now, with more opening over the coming months. Hin Kong beach is 4 minutes away and Thong Sala pier 8, and we can arrange boat and airport transfers from Koh Samui. Check-in is from 15:00, with a minimum stay of three nights.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Koh Phangan?

It depends on the trip. Haad Rin is best for the Full Moon Party, Thong Sala for convenience and budget, the west coast (Wok Tum, Hin Kong, Srithanu) for sunsets, food and quiet, Haad Yao and Haad Son for swimming, Chaloklum and the north for village life and snorkelling, and Thong Nai Pan or Bottle Beach for seclusion.

Where should couples stay in Koh Phangan?

Most couples are happiest on the west coast or in Thong Nai Pan. The west coast gives you sunsets, good restaurants and easy access to the pier; Thong Nai Pan is more remote, with beautiful bays but a steep drive to the rest of the island.

Where should families stay in Koh Phangan?

Look at the west coast and north: Haad Yao for an easy swimming beach, or a villa in Wok Tum or Hin Kong close to Thong Sala's shops, pier and private hospitals. Avoid Haad Rin around the Full Moon Party.

Is it better to stay in Haad Rin or Thong Sala?

Stay in Haad Rin only if the parties are the point of your trip; it is lively and loud around party nights. Thong Sala is the practical choice: the main pier, markets, banks and hospitals are there, and Haad Rin is around 11 km away.

Where should I stay in Koh Phangan as a remote worker?

Srithanu and the surrounding west coast. There are coworking spaces in Srithanu, plenty of cafés with Wi-Fi along Hin Kong road, and a large long-stay community.

Is Koh Phangan quiet outside the Full Moon Party?

Most of the island is quiet most of the time. The big parties are concentrated in Haad Rin and the Baan Tai area; the west and north coasts are calm year-round.
